If most of your sales close on WhatsApp, Google Ads sees almost nothing. It records the tap on your WhatsApp button and stops there. So it optimises for people who tap, not people who buy. The fix is to carry the ad click through the conversation and report the sale back.

## Step 1: Capture the click ID

When someone clicks a Google ad, the landing page URL carries a click ID — usually `gclid`, sometimes `gbraid` or `wbraid` on iOS. Save it in a first-party cookie or local storage as soon as the page loads, along with any UTM tags. If you don't capture it on arrival, it's gone.

## Step 2: Carry it into the chat

You can't pass a GCLID into WhatsApp itself, but you can pass a reference. Generate a short code when the visitor clicks your WhatsApp button, store it next to the click ID, and pre-fill the message with it — for example "Hi, I'm interested in the oak dining table (ref K7Q2)". The customer sends it without thinking, and your team now has a link between the chat and the ad click.

> The goal isn't more chats. It's teaching Google which chats turn into revenue.

## Step 3: Log leads and sales in one place

Your sales team needs one simple habit: when a chat becomes a sale, record the reference, the sale value and the date. A well-structured Google Sheet is enough for most SMEs. A CRM works too, but it isn't required.

## Step 4: Upload sales as offline conversions

Create an offline conversion action in Google Ads, then upload closed sales with the click ID, conversion time and value. Uploads can be scheduled from a Google Sheet, or automated with Apps Script or the API. Google only accepts conversions within the click-through window you set, up to 90 days, so upload regularly.

Where you have the customer's email or phone number, enhanced conversions for leads can add matches the click ID alone would miss.

## Step 5: Let bidding learn — carefully

Don't switch to value-based bidding on day one. Wait until you have a steady flow of uploaded sales, then move gradually. Until then, keep chat taps as a secondary conversion so they're reported but don't drive bidding.

## The same idea works for Meta

Meta's Conversions API accepts offline events too. Capture `fbclid` on arrival, store it the same way, and send closed sales back with it.

The result is simple: your ad platforms stop guessing. They see which clicks became customers and start looking for more of them.
