Performance Max (PMax) runs your ads across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Discover and Maps from a single campaign. Google's automation chooses where to show ads, to whom and with which assets. When it works, it finds buyers you wouldn't have reached manually. When it doesn't, it spends confidently in the wrong direction.

The difference is almost always the data you give it.

## PMax optimises for exactly what you tell it

PMax has fewer manual levers than a Search campaign. Its main input is your conversion goal. If that goal is "form submitted" or "WhatsApp button clicked", PMax will find the cheapest people to do that — which often isn't the people who buy.

> Automation amplifies your data. Clean data gets amplified into growth; messy data gets amplified into waste.

## When to use it

- **Your conversion tracking is clean.** One source of truth, no duplicates, and ideally real sales or qualified leads imported back from your CRM or sheet.
- **You have steady conversion volume.** Automated bidding needs a consistent flow of conversions to learn from. A handful a month isn't enough.
- **You sell products with a good feed.** For e-commerce, an accurate Merchant Center feed with clear titles, prices and availability is a strong foundation.
- **Your Search campaigns already work.** PMax is a way to expand, not a substitute for knowing your core keywords.

## When to wait

- **Your conversions are mostly micro-actions** like taps and form fills with no sales feedback.
- **Your budget is small** and needs to stay on the highest-intent searches.
- **Lead quality is already a problem.** PMax will usually make it more visible, not better.
- **You need tight control** over where ads appear and what they say, for regulatory or brand reasons.

## If you do run it

Separate brand traffic where you can, so PMax isn't taking credit for people who were already searching for you. Use audience signals and good assets, and review the insights and search themes it reports. Watch lead quality, not just cost per conversion.

## The order that works

Fix tracking. Import real outcomes. Prove Search. Then test PMax with a clear budget and a clear success measure.

Done in that order, PMax becomes a useful growth channel instead of an expensive experiment.
